What Is Naoshima Like Through the Year? Closures, Heat and Summer Fireworks

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide gathers what the Naoshima Town Tourism Association and Benesse Art Site Naoshima say, in English, about timing a visit: closures, weather, crowds and the summer fireworks. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Opening days change, so read the official calendar for the day you plan to travel.

Check the calendar first

The tourism association's first advice to visitors is to check that museums and other facilities are open on the days you plan to visit. It says that rarely, due to maintenance or other reasons, your desired works may not be available for viewing, and that many restaurants on the island will also be closed at those times. It points to the Benesse Art Site Naoshima opening calendar.

Mondays

The museum shuttle bus does not operate on the museum's regular closing days, which the association gives as Mondays, and it advises walking from Tsutsujiso to facilities that are open on Mondays. Benesse's Chichu Art Museum page notes that the museum opens on Mondays that are national holidays but closes the next day.

Closures already announced

The association's home page, read on 2026-10-04, lists two notices. One is a temporary closure for regular maintenance from January to March 2027, and the other is a partial closure for an exhibition changeover at the Naoshima New Museum of Art on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. The headlines we read do not say which facilities the January to March closure covers, so read the notice itself.

Winter boats to the other islands

For the boats between Naoshima and the neighboring islands, the association says that from March 1 to November 30 the service operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and that from December 1 to the end of February it operates on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If either museum is closed, the boat does not call at that island, and the service is suspended if both the Teshima Art Museum and the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum are closed on the same day.

Heat

The home page also lists a request, dated 2026-07-18, asking tourists to take heatstroke prevention measures to enjoy summer on Naoshima safely. The FAQ explains why: the walk between the port and the art facilities has many slopes and little shade, and it recommends avoiding it especially in summer. Buses may be full and all rental bicycles may be taken by late morning in peak seasons.

The beach

The coast near the Tsutsujiso lodging on the south side of the island is a sandy beach. The association says it is called a bathing beach because the water is shallow and the quality suits bathing, but there are no lifeguards or rescue personnel, so you swim at your own risk. Barbecues are not permitted within the grounds, and there is no campsite. Public restrooms, showers, changing rooms, a foot-washing area, a cafe and vending machines are on the grounds.

Summer fireworks

The same page says that in the summer the Naoshima Fire Festival is held throughout the island. Alongside artist live performances and local entertainment, over 1,800 fireworks are launched from barges offshore, drawing large crowds. The page gives no date. Because the fireworks bring crowds, plan ferry and lodging early, as the Benesse guide says accommodation on the island is limited.

Busy periods and the Triennale

Benesse says buses and boats may be full during busy periods, such as major holidays and the Setouchi Triennale, which has been held every three years. It recommends planning your itinerary with ample time and buying tickets online as soon as your visit date is decided, because some facilities may sell out. It also says restaurants may be crowded, so include meal plans in advance.

Crowded buses

The association's page on getting around the island warns, in text that is still partly in Japanese on the English page, that buses on weekend and holiday afternoons between Tsutsujiso, the Nokyo-mae stop and Miyanoura Port can be extremely crowded, and that you may have to wait for the next bus. Its FAQ says that after a ferry arrives at Miyanoura Port the bus departs approximately 5 to 10 minutes later, and that there are one to two buses per hour.
